James' interests in glass began at a young age. At 14, he worked as a helping hand to artist Michael Trimpol at his glass blowing studio. Later, when James turned 17 he enrolled in a program where he worked with Mark Lewis in his studio in Toronto. James assisted him in building his studio and later began to learn the basic techniques of working with hot glass.
In 2000 James attended Sheridan College in the glass program where he was taught by Canadian glassblowers such as Dan Crichton. During this time he had also taken intensive workshops taught by Michael Schunke and Catharine Grey.
James works in his new flameworking and cold shop near Rockwood. There, he works regularly on some commission pieces and creating eclectic pieces of jewellery. He is also a resident artist at the Thorn Glass Studio where he creates blown and sculpted works that continue to express the fluidity of glass and the natural colours of his surroundings and from his many travels he has taken.
