I remember when someone once asked me:
"In a room full of objects a child chooses one to relieve his boredom and solitude; why that object in particular?"
When I think about creating an object, I consider its shape, colour and how it will stand out in different surroundings. I want to develop that attraction, that desire to come in closer and take a second look. Using bold colours, soft lines and round curves, my work takes on a certain quality of playfulness- making the objects more inviting to touch and having a harmless and innocent effect. I often look at my pieces similarly to how a child looks at their toys and the process of creating as my time to play.
biography
Heather Buchanan graduated from the glass studio at Sheridan College where she received her Diploma in Crafts and Design and a certificate in Art Fundamentals. Heather has taken workshops taught by well-known glassblowers such as Debora Moore and Blaise Campbell at Harbourfront and the Sheridan glass studio. She has recently finished working in a glass production studio and is presently a resident artist at the Thorn Glass Studio.
Heather has also been working at her new flameworking and coldworking studio creating exclusive jewellery and commission work. Meanwhile, she is focused on evolving her body of work inspired by mid twentieth century and contemporary Scandinavian design.
